What grey noise is

Grey noise (also spelled gray) is shaped so each band feels closer in loudness through typical hearing. Wikipedia calls that grey noise: a filter that follows an equal-loudness contour rather than a simple 1/f slope. A flat electrical spectrum does not sound flat, because the ear is more sensitive in the mids. Grey puts less energy where hearing is keen and more where it is not. RelaxEnd approximates that with a low shelf, a mid cut, and a high shelf on white noise. It is not a lab-calibrated audiogram. White noise is flat per hertz and hisses more. Pink noise falls about 3 dB per octave. Brown noise falls about 6 dB per octave and sits in the bass. This page synthesizes the hearing-weighted bed in the tab with a worklet. There is no looped file and no upload. Darken it with Tone (Quiet Room, Sleep) or the 10-band EQ from 31 Hz to 16 kHz. A sleep timer can run from 15 minutes to 24 hours. This is not a band, and it is not the chatter a grey squirrel makes.

Grey noise for sleep

People put an even-loudness bed on overnight because it covers room spikes without the hiss of white or the rumble of brown. There is no dedicated grey-noise sleep trial. A 2022 review of sound as a sleep aid found mixed results for noise in general. This page is not a black-screen YouTube video. Use Black screen in the nav for a true-black overlay while the generator keeps playing.

  • Sleep or Quiet Room, then 8 hours, 10 hours, or 12 hours on the timer, or Off for all night. 30 minutes and 1 hour are on the timer if you only want a short bed
  • Fade out in Customize if you want the last minute to ease down
  • Headphones work. Start quieter than speakers. Stop if your ears feel tired
  • This is live synthesis, not a 10 hour YouTube track, a Spotify playlist, an MP3 download, or an app with ads

Grey noise for focus

An even bed can sit under reading without white hiss. Evidence for noise and ADHD is mostly white and pink, not grey. Use what lets you stay with the page. RelaxEnd does not diagnose ADHD or treat anxiety.

  • Focus or Meditation for coding, studying, and long concentration blocks. Quiet Room if those feel too present
  • Headphones in a noisy room. Meditation bell in Customize if you want a gentle interval
  • People also search this for anxiety and ADHD. A steady band can make chatter less of a jolt. That is not treatment

Grey noise frequency

Grey noise is not one pitch. On this page white noise goes through a low shelf, a mid cut around 2.8 kHz, and a high shelf, which is a rough equal-loudness shape, not a personal hearing test. There is no best healing frequency for sleep, and 432 Hz is a sine wave, not grey noise. Shape the bed with Tone and the 10-band EQ. Related chips below open sibling colors and the full lab.

How to play grey noise here

  1. Press Play. Audio starts in this tab. Nothing is streamed from a file.
  2. Pick a preset. Choose Meditation, Sleep, Focus, Quiet Room, Even Loudness, or Grey Blend. Each one sets Tone and EQ for this color only.
  3. Set volume. Move volume to a level you could talk over. Loud grey noise can fatigue hearing the same as any other sound.
  4. Shape Tone and EQ. Optional. Drag Tone toward Warm or Soft if the mids feel too present, or open Equalizer and cut 8 kHz and 16 kHz.
  5. Set a sleep timer. Optional. Open Customize for chips from 15 minutes to 24 hours (including 30 min, 1 h, 8 h, 10 h, and 12 h), fade in or out, or a meditation bell.

FAQ

What is grey noise?
Grey noise is white noise filtered so bands feel closer in loudness through typical hearing, following an equal-loudness-style curve rather than a 1/f slope. RelaxEnd approximates that with a low shelf, a mid cut, and a high shelf. You hear a smoother bed than white hiss. It is the same color people search as gray noise. It is not a grey squirrel call and not a band name.
What does grey noise sound like?
A smooth, even static. Less hiss than white, less rumble than brown, less rain-like than pink. Meditation is the raw curve. Quiet Room and Sleep pull the sting out of the top. Grey Blend is brighter in the upper mids.
What does grey noise do? What is it good for?
A constant even bed can make sudden sounds harder to notice, so people use it to sleep, study, sit with tinnitus, or keep a background running. It does not soundproof a room. Try Sleep at night, Focus at a desk. RelaxEnd does not treat medical conditions. There is no special healing frequency in this color.
Is grey noise good for sleep?
Many people sleep with it because the bed is less hissy than white and less rumbly than brown. There is no dedicated grey-noise trial. A 2022 sleep-aid review found mixed results for sound in general. Sleep or Quiet Room, then 8 h, 10 h, or 12 h, or leave the timer Off. Use Black screen in the nav if you want the display true black. This is not medical advice.
What is the difference between grey noise and white noise?
White noise is flat per hertz, so it hisses and covers speech well. Grey here is weighted to hearing, so mids sit back and highs and lows feel closer in loudness. Neither is healthier. If white is too bright for sleep, stay on this page.
What is the difference between grey noise and brown noise?
Brown noise falls about 6 dB per octave and rumbles in the bass. Grey keeps an even-loudness shape, so it does not sink into thunder. If grey feels too thin at night, try brown. If brown feels too dark at a desk, stay on grey.
Does grey noise help you focus or study? Is it good for ADHD?
Some people concentrate better when chatter is covered and the hiss is quieter than white. Published ADHD noise work is mostly white and pink, not grey. Results vary. Use Focus or Meditation and headphones in a noisy room. This site does not diagnose or treat ADHD.
Does grey noise help with anxiety?
A predictable bed can make a room feel less jumpy for some listeners. That is not treatment for anxiety. Quiet Room or Sleep, volume you can talk over, and stop if it makes you more tense.
Does grey noise help tinnitus?
Some people use an even bed as a mask. Grey Blend lifts 4 kHz and 8 kHz when ringing sits in the upper mids. High ringing often sits closer to blue or violet. This is not treatment, and loud noise can make ringing worse. Keep volume moderate and stop if it hurts. Talk to a clinician.
Grey or gray?
Same color. This URL is /grey-noise because that is the spelling people search most. Older /gray-noise links redirect here. The synthesizer id is still gray inside the engine.
Is grey noise bad for you? Is it safe?
Grey noise is sound. High volume can fatigue hearing, same as any other audio. Keep it at a level you could talk over, including on headphones, and stop if it bothers you. Leave the timer Off for all-night play, or pick a chip so playback stops. This page is not medical advice.
How do I play grey noise here? Is there a free app? Can I download an MP3?
Press Play on this page. That is the generator, player, and app. There is no MP3, no WAV download, and no account. After the page loads, synthesis runs in the tab. Add it to your Home Screen if you want an icon. Native Android and iOS apps are coming later.
Is this a YouTube loop, Spotify, or an app with ads?
Live synthesis, not a YouTube upload, a Spotify playlist, a 10 hour track, or a paywalled app. There are no ads in the audio. Play as long as the tab stays open, or set 8, 10, 12, or 24 hours on the timer. Black screen in the nav blacks the display while audio continues.
What noise does a grey squirrel make? Is this a band?
Squirrels chatter, bark, and whistle. That is an animal, not this spectrum. Grey Noise as a band name is also unrelated. This page only plays hearing-weighted synthesized noise.
